The Umoja Project is community, it is ubiquitous and it is necessary. More importantly, it has been developed to strategically have impact on our youth, men, family and community. Each component of this Project has been developed to tap into a terrible wrong that has plagued our men, our families, our community and our people in general and provide a solution.
Getting our men to ‘Show Up!’ and just be present is our starting point. Providing with a security net and the resources to get there life back on track to make showing up not only possible but safe.
Having ‘A Conversation with Brothers’ to discuss the problems and issues confronting black men is another entry point to arriving at some solutions through a meeting of the minds and dialogue. Having the opportunity to bridge the generational gap also presents itself a valuable part of healing and binding stronger relationships with the old and the young. This conversation becomes the vehicle to transfer knowledge.
The development of the Umoja Scholars is the pride of our organization. These youth represent our future, our legacy and the promise of the highest quality of life for all. One! is the conference of the year that brings together in one day, a group of men to sit down with a group of boys to discuss, share and develop seven characteristics to bring our relationships into focus. The dialogue will be complimented with seven courses of learning and fellowship. The objective is to bridge generational gaps among men to establish a common brotherhood.
Donate2Vets – In California there are more homeless veterans than in any other state and black men make up the largest segment of this category. Viet Nam era veterans make up a large number of the homeless veterans but veterans returning from the middle-eastern wars including dessert storm are a growing proportion to this problem. The Donate2Vets program will provide housing assistance, food, employment training and a business center. These men took a stand for us, now we need to take a stand for them.
Real Men Vote was created during California’s 2010 electoral campaign however the vision has always been focused on the upcoming 2012 election. Our objective is to educate and register up to 5 million men by June 2012.
